Depressed, With a Brief Reprieve Each Month

Reader’s Question

Q:

Can I expect full recovery from the maximum dosage of Effexor SR 300mg daily? Also, I’ve been depressed for 4 months now, with reprieves of 5 to 10 days every month or so. Can you explain that?

A:

“Full recovery” is difficult to define but you should expect relief from depression without a doubt. In my experience, when antidepressant medication is used as part of the treatment plan, you’ll start noticing some improvement in a few weeks. Gradually, you’ll notice alternating good and bad days — then a few good days with a rough evening. Eventually your depression will lift but you’ll still experience mood swings from your life stressors. You’ll need to continue on the antidepressant for a number months, even after your mood returns to normal. During your depression, your brain has destroyed your self-esteem and additional time on the antidepressant allows us to effectively repair some of the emotional and psychological damage from the depression.

You should also consult your physician about any pattern that might be present. If you are female, your depressive spells may be related to your menses, that type of thing.
