Substance Abuse Treatment for Crystal Meth

Reader’s Question

Q:

My boyfriend has a crystal meth problem/addiction. It has gotten worse over the last month. He just came back, he was gone 1 day, and now he is sleeping and having really bad anxiety. What can I do or what should I expect these next couple days or so? Is there any medication a doctor can prescribe to him to help get rid of this anxiety problem? What kind of doctor should he see?

A:

If your boyfriend is using meth and getting worse in his meth addiction, he will need substance abuse treatment. Physicians will usually not prescribe medications for anxiety on an outpatient basis for people who have a meth abuse or addiction issue. I would strongly recommend that you encourage substance abuse treatment and possible inpatient rehab and detox. If this continues, you should consider protecting yourself from his addiction as his major relationship at this time is with meth — not a sweetheart. He will have no difficulty damaging your life and finances.
